PASSING OF TREVA SLOTE, THE MOST DECORATED ICON IN ARIZONA’S ANIMAL WELFARE HISTORY!

Treva Slote

Treva Slote passed away Wednesday, March 21st of cancer at the age of 75. Millions of animals and thousands of people were helped by Treva who worked tirelessly 24/7 for 50 years. She conducted cruelty investigations and prosecuted hundreds of animal abusers. She provided emergency animal care for injured strays and veterinary care for those on a fixed income. She was involved in every legislative effort to improve the plight of companion animals, farm animals and wildlife in Arizona. She did it all with grace and a keen wit that kept us all chuckling and on our toes. Treva received an incredible number of local and national awards, the most notable was the coveted “National Humanitarian Award” from the American Veterinary Medical Association, the only non-celebrity person in the field of animal welfare to receive such a high honor joining the ranks of other recipients as actress Betty White and writer Roger Caras. Treva also received the In Defense of Animals (IDA) Lifetime Achievement Award.

IDA has given this award to only three other leaders in the humane community: Dr. Jane Goodall, Cesar Chavez and Didi Silverstone all extraordinary individuals who have throughout their lives courageously advocated for our animal friends. Treva, through her work and dedication, joins this company of compassionate leaders.

Arizonans may recall that fateful day, Saturday, December 21, 1997 when Treva responded to a police call for help at 1:00 in the morning. She hopped in her station wagon with a stretcher, as she always did, and went to rescue a Dalmatian who was hit by a car in South Phoenix. While placing the dog in her station wagon, a drunk driver critically wounded her and a police officer. Treva lost her left leg in the incident. The outpouring of blood donors in the Phoenix area was so amazing that there was a 7 week waiting period at all Arizona Blood Banks – breaking all blood donation records for Arizona!

As a friend, mentor and member of the Animals Benefit Club of Arizona Board of Directors for more than 20 intimate years we shall miss this fabulous lady who touched so many lives in so many varied ways. At Treva’s request ABC will continue her work through these life-giving programs . . . Animal Emergency Services (allows anyone to rescue an injured animal after hours and take it to the nearest emergency clinic for help at no cost to the transporter) and Veterinary Aid for Companion Animals (help with an owned pet for people on a limited income, especially the elderly and disabled).

The public is invited to attend “Treva Slote, A Celebration of Her Life” onSunday, April 29, 2007 from 11:00AM TO 5:00PM with a special ceremony to begin at 1:00 PM.
