Paws for ReadingŪ - Our program helps at-risk youth become successful readers. The presence of a non-critical canine friend encourages children to relax. As a result, they are more willing to tackle the challenge of reading.

Continuing Care Program - helps you to plan for the future by providing for your pets should something happen to you.

Paws With Potential - partners with Sheriff Joe Arpaio (for his MASH UNIT program) and the AzSPCA, allowing us to take their most severe cruelty, neglect and abandonment cases.

ABC Paws for ReadingŪ
Each week Julie Church and her dog, Doggie Bob read with children at Devereux School. Doggie Bob helps them choose a book and learn their letters. And he always wants to see the pictures.

Animals Benefit Club (ABC) works closely with local special needs schools. Our Paws for ReadingŪ program helps at-risk youth be successful readers. The presence of a non-critical canine friend encourages children to relax. As a result, they are more willing to tackle the challenge of reading.

Doggie Bob and friend

The Paws for ReadingŪ program began with a small pilot program at Devereux School in the spring of 2004. Very quickly the specially trained teams were making a big difference in the lives of children who were reading below grade level. Dramatic improvement in reading skills is matched by improved emotional health.

As one student said, “I like reading to Tonto. My grandma told me that Tonto means “faithful friend,” and I know that he’s there for me every week.”

"Two students who were not reading at all two months ago are now reading. This program really has the students involved and excited about learning to read.”
- Anita Fry, Principal of Devereux

“I truly love this program. I feel that I have the opportunity to use my creativity, and with my dog, touch each child's life. When I see improvement it is very rewarding. Doggie Bob loves all the special attention he receives and the interaction with the children.”
- Julie Church, Paws for ReadingŪ Volunteer

PAWS with POTENTIAL
Paws With Potential partners with Sheriff Joe Arpaio (for his MASH UNIT program) and the AzSPCA, allowing us to take their most severe cruelty, neglect and abandonment cases and provide our spay/neuter and veterinary medicine services to them at no cost. ABC Sanctuary then provides the animal's housing needs and follow-up medical care during their long recovery periods. In 2002, we spayed/neutered and provided medical care for approximately 40 dogs through MASH UNIT and AzSPCA referrals. MASH UNIT was a concept created by Sheriff Arpaio in May, 2000, when he called on ABC to assist with the set-up of a no-kill rescue and adoption center for animals in an inner-city area near the jail. Not only did ABC provide the means and expertise to assist this program, since its inception, we have been the sole provider of the MASH UNIT spay/neuter and veterinary clinic services.
