05.03.2009 • Hot weather is here, keep pets COOL!
Temps are already hitting the upper 90s and triple digits in Arizona. When it's this warm, it's more important than ever to remember to leave your pet at home instead of sitting in a hot car. Normal cat or dog body temperatures hover around 101-102 degrees, so pets can't handle the heat as well as people can. On a hot day, even with the car windows open, the temperature inside can reach 215 degrees within ten minutes. In those short moments your pet can suffer brain damage or even die from heat stroke. Riding in an air conditioned car is fine, but if you plan on leaving your pet in your car unattended, leave them safe - and cool - at home instead.
The ABC volunteer orientations are normally on the second Sunday of every month. However, with holidays in April and May, and the Open House in June, they will be on the third Sunday of each month, April 19th, May 17th, and June 21st respectively.
See you at the orientations and the Open House, and happy holidays!
03.28.2009 • Brush your pets, fun for everyone!
It's a good idea to brush your dog or cat's coat several times a week, particularly if they've got heavy or long fur. If your dog is prone to getting into muddy areas of your yard, a good brushing will quickly rid the fur of the dried dirt without the need for a bath. Brushing also ensures that your cat or dog will not wind up needing to have matted fur trimmed away, plus it's a good opportunity to check them for bumps, ticks, etc.
Most cats and dogs really enjoy a nice, relaxing brush too! It's another great opportunity for you to bond with your four-legged friends.
01.27.2009 • Don't forget to vaccinate your pets!
One of the easiest things you can do to ensure that your pets are safe and healthy is to keep their vaccinations current. Most vets will remind you when it's time for a booster with a phone call or postcard, but it's always a good idea to keep track yourself just in case.
Particularly for those who have multiple cats and/or dogs, a list including the following details is a valuable resource: the animal's name, vaccination date, doctor, and clinic, and any relevant notes.
01.11.2009 • Lessons Learned from "Marley & Me"
Whenever a hit movie is released about dogs (think 101 Dalmatians, Air Bud, Marley & Me, etc.) people around the world fall in love with these charismatic stars of the silver screen. In the wake of the success of each film, families rush out to adopt Dalmatians, Golden Retrievers, or Labs, only to find out that real life doesn't always match the picture painted by Hollywood.
If you're interested in adopting, reading up on various breeds and visiting with the many unique personalities is always encouraged.
With the spiking interest in Labs (like our Lab-mix friend Jake on the left) brought on by Marley & Me, it's a good time to remind potential adopters that Labs, like all dogs, will need proper guidance and training. Marley & Me is a good primer for "what NOT to do" when raising a puppy.

These foods/beverages should always be kept away from pets:
• Turkey Bones: Turkey (and chicken) bones and splintered fragments can get stuck in the roof of the mouth, throat, and intestines.
• Tomatoes: all kinds are toxic to cats, including parts of the tomato plant. Ingesting even a single cherry tomato can cause severe gastrointestinal upset.
• Alcohol: alcohol poisoning can lead to coma and death
• Gum, candy: many candies and gum contain XYLITOL which can cause toxic or fatal liver damage to pets. All products containing xylitol should be kept well out of pets' reach.
• Mushrooms: Certain species of mushrooms, including those growing in damp areas of your yard, are toxic to pets and can cause shock and death.
• Raw potatoes (especially with green spots)
• Turkey skin
• Nutmeg
• Peach, apricot, other fruit pits (contain cyanide)
• Caffeine: anything containing caffiene is dangerous
NEVER allow your pet to rummage through trash. Moldy food contains toxins that can cause serious illness.
Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect that your pet has ingested any of these items. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

12.05.2008 • Yes, cocoa mulch IS toxic to dogs & cats
Cocoa Mulch contains theobromine, an ingredient found in all chocolate. Many animal lovers know that chocolate shouldn't be given to dogs and cats, but don't forget about other cocoa products, especially if you're an avid gardener.
Snopes.com has more info on cocoa mulch and its toxic effects. To be on the safe side, make sure the only "chocolate" in your garden is your chocolate lab, like our pal Scout on the left.
These foods, prevalent around the holidays, should NEVER be given to pets:
• Chocolate
• Grapes and raisins
• Onions and garlic
• Macadamia nuts
